Archery

  • Me: Look, they're doing archery over at our park.
  • Amber: They're shooting a tree?!
  • Me: No, they're doing *archery.* Bows and arrows and stuff. It's called "archery."
  • Amber: Oh, so they're shooting down *our* tree? Who's shooting down our tree?

Friday Afternoon Paddle w/ Pops

A long time ago—back when I was healthy—I went kayaking. Then I got super sick. I’m really hoping the two events aren’t related.

I’m still not all the way better (potentially bad news/timeline foreshadowing for Tom & Co.), but I was better enough to get back out on the water (à la kayak) with my dad this afternoon (in preparation for the Ironman). We spent some time seeing the course and getting a feel for what it might be like to be in a boat with swimmers in need of rescue.

Dad was also kind enough to play safety boat as I practiced some wet exits and a boat-assisted water re-entry. (Yes, the water was cold, and no, I didn’t opt for the wetsuit.) I did try one roll (I used to be able to do it), but with a boat sloshy and full of water, and zero practice in years, I did a classy 3/4 roll with some swimming flourishes instead.

My five-year-old Amber even got in on the action by helping me clean and dry the boat when I got home. I think, though, she just wanted it dry so she could play in it.

She’s made me promise to take her in a kayak when she’s bigger. I think that’s a promise I’ll try to keep.

If anyone’s curious, Amber would like one of these for a birthday/holiday/just-because gift.
That’s my girl!
Updated: Now that Elle has seen this photo, she’s demanding one, too. Goodness. :)
